If you are intending to lose weight you must be motivated to do so. Unless you yourself want to become slimmer it is not going to happen. You need to be able to imagine yourself as slim and at your ideal weight. The mind can be a powerful ally in helping you lose weight.

No matter how many people advise, cajole or bully you into starting a diet it is only you who can actually do it. You must believe you can successfully lose the weight, if you do not, no diet is ever going to work.

The following is a technique which can help you focus on your goals and program your mind into thinking yourself thin.

Before going to sleep at night lay on your bed. Your room should be quiet with the lights off. Lying on your back try to relax and breath slowly and deeply. Close your eyes and say to yourself that you feel relaxed. You are now going to relax the whole of your body. Starting with your toes try to relax first them, once you have relaxed them move onto your feet and ankles. Continue to repeat to yourself that you are relaxed, continue all the way up your legs, along the arms to the hands and fingers. Repeat to yourself my arms are relaxed, my legs are relaxed, continue in this manner until your whole body including your face and head are relaxed. You may have to do this a number of times. Repeat I am relaxed, to yourself until it becomes fact and you are totally relaxed. To get to this state of relaxation may take up to five minutes or longer. Continue to breath slowly and deeply. In this relaxed state your mind will be open to suggestion.

Now you must visualise yourself as slim and happy. Imagine the person you would like to be after you have lost the weight. See your new slim self with family and friends imagine their reactions to the new you. Think of all the positive things that will happen now you are slimmer.

Repeat this technique a couple of times a week and it will help keep your motivation high. This simple mental programming will help a great deal when you are on a diet.
